This biography from the Archives of AskART.com:
Laurence M. Gartel, computer artist was born June 5, 1956. He received his formal education at: School of Visual Arts, N.Y., Bachelor of Fine Arts Graphics 1977. For more than two decades, Laurence Gartel has devoted himself to computer imaging.
Laurence Gartel has emerged in The Art of Computer Imaging, his career as a computer artist can be traced to 1976 at the Media Study in Buffalo, New York, a center for experimental video funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. He is now one of the standard bearers of a new art form. Beginning with a camera image, he scans photos and merges them into the computer system. Creating a multi-layered video image, he enlarges them, sometimes to nearly 40 x 50 inches. This is only the beginning. He uses multiple systems and the latest technical advances to create his newest works of art. Digital art is often an eclectic mixture of images and abstractions quite unlike what we are accustomed to expect from painting or photography. Computer information exists, as numbers, the efforts of an intelligent assistant, the computer, are logical, not conceptual. The complexity of detail expands the possibilities. If you can imagine it, you can most likely create it on the dynamic canvas of a computer.
